Fancy switching up the weekend plans? Grab your tent and poles and pitch up somewhere altogether new for a night or three under the stars. Your camp site can be as close as the back garden – simply being free from screens, gadgets and stimulating blue light can help you feel more rested. “We can tap into the antidepressant effects of being in Nature,” says Suzy Reading, a chartered psychologist, yoga teacher and health coach, whose latest book, Sit to Get Fit (Aster), offers practical ways to stay fit and flexible in an often-sedentary world (@suzyreading). “The fractal patterns we find in nature are soothing for the senses, calming for the nervous system and a dose of sunlight helps boost our circadian rhythms, helping us feel more alert during the day and drowsy when it is time to sleep.”

The time most women, in particular, spend on ourselves as part of our beauty and wellness routine is very often the only time in any given day that we do something purely for ourselves. And that self-care doesn’t just make our skin softer, or give us a sensory treat – it actually charges us up again so that we can get on with the job of looking after our families, colleagues, homes and gardens. |

Using a potent paste of herbs, grains and spices such as triphala, this type of invigorating Aryuveda body rub increases circulation and breaks down fat deposits. Udvartanam is the Sanskrit term meaning ‘to move upwards’, and the massage uses long strokes to boost lymphatic drainage. It’s a great ayurvedic treatment for cellulite and weight loss. Plump and ripe summer fruits along with fresh, seasonal veggies make for delicious juices, ice-creams and smoothies you can whizz up at home. "Making your own smoothie allows you to have control over what goes into the drink and tailor this to your own nutritional requirements and tastes," explains Nathalie Gudgeon, a BANT registered nutritional therapy practitioner with 10 years of experience and functional medicine training. "Smoothies have a reputation for being high in fruit, and therefore sugar, but my own family smoothie recipes are built around providing all important macronutrients, whilst being low in simple sugars and are wonderfully sustaining."
Tahini and greens power smoothie (serves 2) 1 small frozen banana 1/2 avocado 2 tbsp walnuts 2 tbsp flaxseeds 1 tbsp tahini 1 tbsp psyllium husk 1 tbsp maca powder 1 scoop Nuzest Vanilla Protein powder 1 scoop greens powder (I like Nuzest Good Green Vitality)
tbsp gluten free rolled oats Handful of fresh spinach or kale 1 cup coconut water cups filtered water Blend together ingredients in a high powdered smoothie maker such as a Vitamix or Nutribullet. Add more water if you prefer a runnier consistency. Ice is also a nice addition if you prefer the drink cooler. |
Being able to find a sense of inner peace is key in our quest for happiness. Often we’re too busy rushing around and ticking things off our long to-do lists to really feel what it is we’re actually feeling. By stopping and listening to what’s going on in your mind and body, you can enjoy emotions as they appear. “Find inner stillness by coming back to your breath and enjoying a daily meditation practice,” Fran advises. “Seek clarity and calmness so you can feel inside more authentically when happiness and joy show up.”
