The mermaid is a great move for increasing strength and flexibility in the arms, shoulders and torso.
Sit on your right side with knees bent. Your top leg should be directly on top of the lower leg. If this is uncomfortable, remain on your side and open the knees so that they are in line with the shoulders. Hold the ankle with your left hand. Inhale and reach the right arm overhead, with the upper arms as close to the ears as possible. Exhale and bend the body directly to the left side. The top of the head should reach towards the ankles and the hips should stay anchored to the ground. The right side of the ribcage reaches to the ceiling. Inhale and rise back up tall. Repeat three times, then switch sides and do a further three sets.

I think social media has made it impossible to avoid comparison. It’s so easy to do as well. You just roll over in the morning, grab your phone and you can compare yourself to Taylor Swift or Oprah Winfrey! It’s highly demotivating. For me, it’s not about focusing on external things – gratitude has taught me that I can change my life for the better, rather than looking in the wrong direction. |

“To get skin really glowing try a 10 minute facial massage several times a week," says John Masters, founder of the eponymous luxury organic hair and skincare range. "This can benefit your face in many ways, firstly it’s a great de-stresser (facial tension can cause lines especially on the brow and around the mouth). Regular massage relaxes tight muscles to help alleviate and reduce stress lines. The lymphatic system plays a key role in skin health and there are a lot of lymph nodes within the facial area. Massage helps to stimulate the lymphatic system helping to facilitate toxin elimination from the face, so reducing skin congestion, while stimulating blood flow, bringing fresh nutrients and promoting collagen production. Select a light, non-greasy oil like grapeseed and use gentle but firm upward-sweeping movements, concentrating on areas you know you hold tension and always avoiding the eye area. When you have finished, wash off the excess oil and moisturise as usual.”

Make friends with carbs... |
The carb-free way of eating is like any other fad diet – there is some truth to it, but most of the time it is part of a study taken out of context and applied to a wider scenario. Some carbohydrates are better for you than others, and while you should try to limit the amount of processed carbs you eat (including white pasta, bread and cereals), it is the overeating that causes weight gain, not the carbohydrates themselves. Simply cutting out the excess of processed carbs from your diet could help you to lose weight. Eliminating an entire food group is not linked to good health, and this is far more important than dieting to get fast results.

Add a tablespoon of salt to a glass of water and it makes a significant difference. The same spoon of salt added to a jug of water makes some difference to the taste. Add it to a lake, however, and it hardly affects anything. Mindfulness makes us larger containers. This happens as we remove from ourselves all the clutter of past and future concerns. In the present, we have endless inner space, which is a great step towards happiness. Difficult emotions, like salt, may remain, but their power to affect us is diffused. Previously they could ruin our day, but now they can barely ruin five minutes.
